How Important is Hydration to NASCAR Drivers?

Perhaps more than you may realize...

Even if you are not an active fan, you have probably been exposed to NASCAR at one point or another. There is way more to racing than just driving around a circular track at high speeds, it is a physically and mentally taxing sport. EarthWater spent 2017 as the Official Water of BK Racing and had the opportunity to gain some serious track-side experience with this incredible team. After nearly a year in the pit with BK Racing, we can now offer an insider perspective on the athleticism that goes into each NASCAR race and why it's so pertinent for each driver to stay hydrated while racing.

So, what does NASCAR have to do with Earthwater’s fulvic/humic infused supplement water? Most races typically last at least 3 hours (not including delays), and as a driver there are other risks involved besides crashing the car or vehicle malfunctions. Other risks associated with racing include the inhalation of harmful fumes (gasoline, burning rubber), hearing loss due to track noise, and the largest risk being - DEHYDRATION!

Spending 3+ hours tightly fit into a car with burn-prevention gear, helmets, and gloves can severely dehydrate someone as temperatures can reach well over 100+ degrees, especially on a hot day. In more severe cases, it could even lead to deep vein thrombosis or blood clotting. In fact, cup series driver Brian Vickers was ordered by his physician to stop racing for 6 months after developing such a clot.

Additionally, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr both had to be treated due to severe dehydration after races. Earnhardt Jr needed bags of IV fluids, and here is a video of Johnson receiving aid after being helped out of his car from a race. -

Here is another example where Kyle Busch collapsed to the ground after a race, gasping for air. He was transported and treated at the onsite medical facility for overheating and increased carbon monoxide levels, and was later released. -

During a recent interview with NASCAR driver Gray Gaulding, a 19-year-old Virginian who started racing in NASCAR Legends series since age 12, he mentions that he would lose between 10-13 pounds after a race. Astoundingly, he regularly weighs in at 155 lbs. That’s a lot of water lost in just 3 hours. In efforts to support him, NASCAR, and the importance of hydration, EarthWater, in partnership with BK Racing, is sponsoring Gaulding and the #23 car THIS SUNDAY, February 25th at Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, kicking off the first race of the 2018 Monster Energy Cup Series Season. We’ll be there in person to cheer him on, so don’t forget to catch us on live FOX!

Since introducing Gaulding to our flagship product, FulHum, he claims it has kept him better hydrated during races than normal water and has become part of his pre and post-race routine.

We know that hydration is an extremely important factor in the competitive world of NASCAR and we are proud to provide BK Racing and its drivers with an even BETTER water - one that packs incredible, natural minerals, absorbs faster into the body, has a +9 pH and antioxidants, all to help keep this team running at peak speed!
